... What are Burnish, exactly?

[ Lio has probably given the spiel a million times here but she has actually never asked. ]

It's a mutation. Some people have it, and when it's awakened, they start being able to control fire. Or...especially when it first awakens, they can't control it, even. They just burn.

[He seems thoughtful, talking about this.]

...A lot of fires are started by accident that way. And when the mutation first appeared thirty years ago, the world nearly ended. A lot of people died, a lot of homes and cities burned to the ground. Because of that, some people really hate the Burnish, even though it's not something they can help.

I wonder how the state of your world looks compared to mine. I can't imagine there's enough people left for them to be able to pick and choose who they want to care about. Aren't survivors supposed to come together after large disasters?

The Burnish aren't hurt by fire, so in some ways, it's like. It seems like they were the ones causing everything, and not the ones in danger. There were groups of Burnish who tried to burn everything down on purpose, even if it killed everyone else. And then the Gov came along and invented tech that could keep a city safe, and made it possible to stop Burnish who were committing crimes. Everyone saw him as a hero for that.
