Just so you know, I'm not some kind of dork. I'm reading these for an important reason.

I know all about the history of Japan. [Well, that's definitely an exaggeration.] Specifically, the great traditions of firefighting!

See? Look and be amazed! Gaze upon the heroic hikeshi who faced fires with nothing but their bare hands, burning spirits, and the inspiration of their matoi! I need to find a better picture so Purple will know what I'm talking about when I ask for my stuff back.

How cool. You seem rather knowledgeable about them.

[ he's trying so hard to hide a smile. what a fanboy. Hori certainly has some vague recollection of them in action but the shinsengumi were usually out of the area by the time they arrived ]

I thought they were more for signaling for others than for the fires themselves.....?

Oh! Are you a scholar of matoi too?

[That only gets him more excited! Someone else who knows about it.]

That's true! But in this modern day and age, old technology has to adapt! That's why I use mine for all sorts of different functions.

Not particularly of matoi but you could say we cross paths occasionally.

[ somehow coming out and saying I Existed During That Era sounds like it'd be a disaster ]

But you are right. Using old methods to solve new problems certainly need more than just it's original function.

I made mine into a grappling hook. Plus, if I spin it really fast, it can work like a fan! I believe that the spirits of the ancient firefighters who came before me would approve wholeheartedly of these techniques.

I'd say so! You certainly are keeping the spirit of the hikeshi alive. I'm sure they'd be thrilled to hear that someone continue their tradition after so many centuries.
